INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to create a simple test cube to test the Business Analytics configurator in Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

MORE INFORMATION

When you test the Business Analytics configurator in a customized database in Microsoft Dynamics NAV, we recommend that you use a simple test cube instead of a demo cube. Microsoft Dynamics NAV provides a demo database that includes demo cubes. However, the configuration of the data in a customized database may not match the configuration of the data in the demo cubes that are included in the demo database. If this is true, you may receive an error message when you run the Business Analytics configurator. Therefore, to test the Business Analytics configurator in a customized database, use a simple test cube instead of a demo cube. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Administration, expand Application Setup, expand General, and then click Business Analytics Setup.
  2. In the BA Db. Overview dialog box, click the lookup button in the Name field.
  3. In the BA Databases dialog box, create a new line. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Press F3.
    2. Enter the following information:
      • Code: TEST
      • Name: Test
    3. Click to select the Active check box.
    4. In the Path to Configurator column, specify the path of the configurator.
    5. Click BA Database, and then click Overview to display the BA Db. Overview dialog box.
  4. Create a simple test cube. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the BA Db. Overview dialog box, click the Cube line, click Function, click New, and then click Yes.
    2. In the Fact Table No field, click the lookup button, and then click the following line in the Objects dialog box:
      • ID: 32
      • Name: Item Ledger Entry
    3. Click OK.
    4. In the BA Db. Cube Card dialog box, click Cube, and then click Dimensions.
    5. In the BA Db. Cube Dimensions dialog box, click Functions, and then click Select Fields.
    6. In the BA Field Selection dialog box, locate the following entry:
      • No.: 8
      • Field Caption: Location Code
    7. In the Selected column, click to select the check box for the entry that you located, and then click OK.
    8. Close the BA Db. Cube Dimensions dialog box.
    9. In the BA Db. Cube Card dialog box, click Cube, and then click Measures.
    10. In the BA Db. Cube Measures dialog box, click Select Fields.
    11. In the BA Field Selection dialog box, locate the following entry:
      • No.: 12
      • Field Caption: Quantity
    12. In the Selected column, click to select the check box for the entry that you located, and then click OK.
    13. Close the BA Db. Cube Dimensions dialog box.
    14. Close the BA Db. Cube Card dialog box.
  5. Close the BA Db. Overview dialog box.
  6. In the BA Databases dialog box, click the line that has the test code, click Functions, and then click Update XML.
  7. In the BA Databases dialog box, click Functions, and then click Start Configurator.
Note If you do not use the Item Ledger Entry table in the BA Db. Cube Card dialog box, you can select another table in the database. Then, you can select a single dimension and a single measure. Therefore, the cube will maintain a simple configuration.

If the Business Analytics configurator runs successfully when you use the test cube, you can create cubes that have more complex configurations. If you do this, you may receive error messages. However, you will know that these error messages are caused by the new cube configuration because the Business Analytics configurator ran successfully when you used the test cube.
