SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
You are running Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a Windows-based computer.
In a workgroup environment, you use Group Policy to disable the Turn on automatic detection of the intranet setting and to enable the Intranet Sites: Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones setting.
You use Internet Explorer 7 to access a local intranet site.
In this scenario, the local site is displayed through the Internet zone instead of through the "Local intranet" zone as expected.

RESOLUTION

Windows XP hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To enable this hotfix after installation, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey, and then click it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
4. Type the following key name, and then press ENTER:
FEATURE_ZONES_CHECK_ZONEMAP_POLICY_KB941001
5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
6.Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
8. Type 1, and then click OK.
9. Exit Registry Editor.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use Internet Explorer maintenance policies to set the intranet zone values to the values that are described in the "Symptoms" section.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

To use Group Policy to set the intranet zone values that are described in the "Symptoms" section, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2.Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, expand Internet Explorer, and then expand Internet Control Panel.
3.Click Security Page, right-click Intranet Sites: Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones, and then click Properties.
4.Click Enabled, and then click OK.
5.Right-click Turn on automatic detection of the intranet, and then click Properties.
6.Click Disabled, and then click OK.
7.Exit the Group Policy Object Editor
To verify the settings, follow these steps:
1.On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2.On the Security tab, click Local intranet, and then click Sites.
The Automatic detection of intranet network check box is cleared, and the Include all local (intranet) sites not list in other zones check box is selected.
