Communication Server edge server services cannot start on a server that is running Access Edge Server

SYMPTOMS

On a server that is running Microsoft Office Communications Server Access Edge Server, the RTCSRV service cannot start.

Note If A/V Conferencing Edge Server is also running on the server, the following services cannot start:
  • RTCMEDIARELAY
  • RTCMRAUTH
Note If Web Conferencing Edge Server is also running on the server, the RTCDATAPROXY service cannot start.

When this problem occurs, the following events are logged in the System log.

If you run the Validation Wizard on the server, the following error message is logged in the Validation Wizard log.

Note Based on the edge servers that run on the server, the following error message varies. For example, if Web Conferencing Edge Server does not run on the server, information about Web Conferencing Edge Server is not in the following error message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Authenticated Users group is not a member of the Users group.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, add the Authenticated Users group to the local Users group.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type lusrmgr.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Local Users and Groups window, click Groups, and then double-click Users.
  3. In the Users Properties dialog box, click Add.
  4. In the Select Users dialog box, click Locations, click to select the local computer name in the list, and then click OK.
  5. In the Select Users dialog box, type Authenticated Users under Enter the object names to select.
  6. Click Check Names, and then click OK.
  7. In the Users Properties dialog box, click OK.
  8. Close the Local Users and Groups window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, the Authenticated Users group is a member of the local Users group. Edge server services require that the Authenticated Users group is a member of the local Users group. The error information that is listed in the "Symptoms" section is dependent on the version of Communications Server and on the Windows Server operating system on which that Communications Server Edge server is hosted.
