SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You lock and then unlock a Windows Vista-based client computer.
  • You try to access network resources.
In this scenario, you may be prompted for user credentials.

Note This problem does not occur on a Windows XP-based client computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur in an environment in which two-factor authentication products are used to deploy a one-time password token. In this environment, Windows Vista does not use the existing Kerberos ticket-granting tickets (TGTs) to request a ticket for the network resource. However, Windows Vista does perform an Authentication Service (AS) request. Therefore, you may be prompted for user credentials.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Two-factor authentication provides improved security because it requires that the user provide the following authentication items:
  • The combination of a valid user name and a password
  • A token or a certificate
A typical example of two-factor authentication that uses a certificate involves using a smart card. The smart card contains the certificate.
