An HTML e-mail message appears garbled in Outlook when you send the message to an Exchange Server 2007 user

Article ID:941851
Last Review:November 28, 2007
Revision:1.3

SYMPTOMS

When you send a HTML e-mail message to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 user, the e-mail message appears garbled in Microsoft Office Outlook. This problem occurs if the charset property appears only inside the HTML META tag and not stamped in the MIME part.

Note If you send the message to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 user, the message is displayed correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Exchange Server 2007 uses the default codepage to process the message if there is no charset property specified in the MIME part.
