SYMPTOMS

When you try to install an assembly on a Windows XP-based computer, the installation is not successful. If you enable the verbose Windows Installer Logging feature to troubleshoot this problem, you may find a message that resembles the following in the verbose log file:
MSI (s) (9C:A0) [Time]: skipping installation of assembly component: {ID} since the assembly already exists
Notes
  • This issue occurs if an application has already installed the assembly or if the directory for the assembly exists.
  • This issue also occurs during an assembly maintenance installation process. For example, this issue also occurs during the repairing process, the patching process, and the uninstalling process.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an error in the fusion component and the Windows Installer 3.x component.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
