INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to restore a company database file after you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista if a backup file was not created in Microsoft Office Accounting Express, in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional, or in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting.

After you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista, you may discover that a backup file was not created in Accounting Express, in Accounting Professional, or in Small Business Accounting. To restore a company database file in this situation, follow these steps.

Note You must have administrator access to attach or to detach a company database file.
  1. Install one of the following programs on the computer that you upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista:
    • Accounting Express
    • Accounting Professional
  2. Copy the .sbd file and the .sbl file from the backup folder that was created when you installed Windows Vista. The backup folder is in the following location:
    • In Small Business Accounting, the following path is the path of the backup folder:
      C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ\Data
    • In Accounting Express or in Accounting Professional, the following path is the path of the backup folder:
      C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\MSSQL\Data
      Note The MSSQL.x placeholder represents the folder for an instance of SQL Server on the computer. If more than one instance is installed, replace the placeholder with the correct folder for the instance of SQL Server that is running.
  3. Save the .sbd file and the .sbl file in the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Data
  4. Attach the company database files that you saved in step 3, and then create a new .sbc file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Use the appropriate method:
      • In Accounting Express or in Accounting Professional, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Accounting Tools, and then click Data Tools.
      • In Small Business Accounting, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and then click Data Tools
    2. In the Microsoft Office Accounting Data Utilities dialog box, click the Advanced Tools tab.
    3. Click Attach.
    4. In the Attach a Database dialog box, click Browse, locate the company database file that you want to attach, and then click Open.
      Notes
      • By default, the data file is located in the following directory:
        C:\Program files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\MSSQL\Data
      • The company database file is an .sbd file.
    5. In the Database name field, type the name for the new company database. This will be the name of the company database (.sbc) file.
    6. Click Attach.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click Close to close the Microsoft Office Accounting Data Utilities dialog box.
