FIX: A query that involves an outer join operation runs very slowly in Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, a query that involves an outer join operation runs very slowly. However, if you use the FORCE ORDER query hint in the query, the query runs much faster. Additionally, the execution plan of the query contains the following text in the Warnings column:
NO JOIN PREDICATE

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. The SQL Server 2005 builds that were released after SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 was released
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

After you apply the hotfix, you must enable trace flag 4101 and trace flag 4121 to activate this hotfix. To enable or disable the trace flags dynamically while the SQL Server service is running, run the following statements.
--Enable the trace flags
DBCC TRACEON(-1,4121,4101)
--Disable the trace flags
TRACEOFF(-1,4121,4101)
Note When the SQL Server service is restarted, the trace flags will be disabled on startup.

To enable the trace flags permanently, add the following to the end of the SQL Server Startup parameter list, and then restart the SQL Server service:

;-T4121;-T4101
