SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 environment, you send an e-mail message to an external user. However, the e-mail address is not correctly encoded according to RFC 2047. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The display name of the recipient or of the sender is in the Lastname, Firstname format.
  • The display name of the recipient or of the sender contains an umlaut.
For example, a display name such as "Jürgen, Müller" is displayed as follows in the header of the received message:
To: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?J=FCrgen,_M=FCller?=" <xxx@xxx.xxxl>
A comma is missing. The display name in the header should be displayed as follows:
To: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?J=FCrgen=2C_M=FCller?=" <xxx@xxx.xxx>
Note This problem may cause some third-party applications such as an SMTP relay server or a POP3 client not to work successfully when the application parses the e-mail address.
