Bug: #50001784 (SQL Hotfix)
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services:
  • You run the UPDATE CUBE statement to update a dimension.
  • The dimension does not have the WriteEnabled property enabled.
  • You run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query on the dimension.
  • The MDX query uses unary operators.
  • The MDX query references dimensions that are not in the measure group of the dimension that you are querying.
In this scenario, when you run the MDX query, an access violation occurs and the Analysis Services service stops unexpectedly. Additionally, an event message that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:

Log Name: Application
Source: ComputerName
Event ID: 22
Task Category: (256)
Level: Error
Computer: ComputerName
Description:
The description for Event ID 22 from source ComputerName cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Internal error: An unexpected exception occured.
The message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

Note In this event message, "occured" is a misspelling of the word "occurred."

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 4. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
941450 Cumulative update package 4 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove from the MDX query the dimensions that are unrelated to the measure group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
