FIX: High CPU usage occurs periodically on a subscriber when you synchronize a merge publication in SQL Server 2005Article ID: 942668 - View products that this article applies to. Bug: #50001793 (SQL Hotfix) Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL
Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative,
each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were
included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix
release. SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you configure a merge
publication on a database. You create a pull subscription to the merge
publication. When you synchronize the replication on a subscriber, you
notice high CPU usage periodically. Additionally, the execution of the replication procedure
may last a minute or longer. CAUSEThis issue occurs because SQL Server executes the
sp_MScleanup_subscriber_history stored procedure.
This procedure
deletes
history data from the MSmerge_history system table on the subscriber.
If the MSmerge_history system table contains many rows, the DELETE
statement in the stored procedure causes high CPU usage. RESOLUTIONThe fix for this issue was first released in
Cumulative Update 4. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative

Cumulative update package 4 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2937137 Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL
Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to
an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that
is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server
service pack.
