SYMPTOMS

When you apply hotfix 930770 or hotfix 926681 on a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005-based computer, and then you open the MOM Operator Console to view the alerts, alerts that apply to performance threshold rules contain no information in the Description field.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be in one of the following configurations:
  • The computer hosts MOM 2005 Management Server Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • The computer hosts a version of an agent that had MOM 2005 SP1 installed manually.

Installation instructions

To apply this hotfix, follow these steps.
MOM 2005 servers
Manually apply this hotfix to each MOM 2005 server in your MOM management groups. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Copy the MOM2005-SP1-KB942736-X86-IA64-ENU.msi file to a local folder or to a network shared folder. If you use a network shared folder, make sure that you can access the folder from the computers that require this hotfix.
  2. Log on as an administrator to one of the MOM 2005 servers that require this hotfix.
  3. Run the MOM2005-SP1-KB942736-X86-IA64-ENU.msi file on each MOM 2005 server. You can run the file at a command prompt, or you can run the file in Windows Explorer.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on each MOM 2005 server that meets the prerequisites for this hotfix.
MOM 2005 agents
To apply this hotfix for the MOM 2005 agent component, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation:
  • Use the MOM 2005 Administrator Console to apply this hotfix to the MOM 2005 agents that have the control level set to Full. The list of the MOM 2005 agents that can be automatically updated appears in the Microsoft Operations Manager (ServerName)\Administration\Computers\Pending Actions folder.
  • Manually apply this hotfix on each MOM 2005 agent that has the control level set to None. These agents are listed in the Microsoft Operations Manager (ServerName)\Administration\Computers\Agent-managed Computers folder.
  • For MOM 2005 agents that were manually installed with the control level set to Full after this hotfix was applied to the MOM 2005 server, either manually apply the hotfix to the MOM 2005 agents or use the MOM 2005 server to apply this hotfix. To use the MOM 2005 server to apply the hotfix, follow these steps:
    1. Make sure that manually applying the hotfix on MOM agents is approved. To do this, examine the Pending Actions folder in the MOM 2005 Administrator Console.
    2. In the Agent-managed Computers folder of the MOM 2005 Administrator Console, right-click the MOM 2005 agent, and then click Update Agent Settings.
