INTRODUCTION

This article describes an update for the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) for the following Windows operating systems:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
SP3 for Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS)
SP3 for Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP)

WEPOS and WinFLP are reduced footprint versions of the Windows XP Professional operating system. WEPOS and WinFLP contain a subset of Windows XP Professional functionality that is selected to support targeted functionality. WEPOS is an OEM product and is designed for Point of Service devices. WinFLP is offered to Software Assurance (SA) customers only. If you run Windows Update from WEPOS or from WinFLP, Windows Update identifies WEPOS or WinFLP as Windows XP. WEPOS and WinFLP receive most updates for Windows XP Professional. However, some updates have specific versions for WEPOS and for WinFLP. For example, there is a special version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 that is created for WEPOS and for WinFLP. Users of the POS devices that are running WEPOS must coordinate a servicing approach with their device distributors or the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from whom they purchased WEPOS. Support for WinFLP is from the SA program.

MUI in Windows XP SP3

You have a computer that is running the English version of one of the following Windows operating systems together with the MUI Pack:

Windows XP SP3
SP3 for WEPOS
SP3 for WinFLP

On this computer, you may select a non-English language for the user interface (UI). However, English text may appear in the UI instead of the selected language. The English text may appear in lists, menus, dialog boxes, product Help, and other locations. The issue affects the following components:

Microsoft Management Console 3.0 (MMC).
Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1 (RDP).
Network Access Protection (NAP).
Scripting binaries.

How to obtain Windows MUI

The Windows XP MUI Pack and the Windows 2000 MUI Pack are sold through Volume Licensing programs. These programs include the Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP / Open), Microsoft Select, and Microsoft Enterprise agreement. The MUI pack is also sold together with a new computer as an OEM version at the customer's request. The Windows XP MUI Pack and the Windows 2000 MUI Pack are not available through retail channels.

WinFLP is offered to SA customers only. You can obtain the MUI support for WinFLP from the SA program. WEPOS is an OEM product. You can obtain the MUI support for WEPOS from OEMs or device distributors.
