SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) Wizard in Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 to start a P2V process, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Not enough memory available. Maximum memory available is 1492 MB. Accounting for reserves, maximum memory available is 1236 MB.
Note The values for maximum memory vary in the error message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the targeted physical system has more physical random access memory (RAM) than the Virtual Server has the capacity to allocate. The P2V Wizard configures the memory for the virtual machine to equal to the RAM of the targeted physical system. You cannot specify the memory setting for the virtual machine by using the P2V Wizard.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, start the P2V process by using a PowerShell script that uses the -MemoryMB switch. This switch lets you specify a value for the memory setting for the virtual machine.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Virtual Server allocates available physical memory to virtual machines. The physical RAM that a Virtual Server has affects the maximum amount that can be configured for a virtual machine.

You can use Virtual Machine Manager Admin Console to see the maximum configured memory for Virtual Server by clicking the Hardware tab in the Host Properties dialog box. You can also locate this information by clicking Physical Computer Properties on the Virtual Servers administration Web site.
