Symptoms

In Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration 4.0, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Mail Provider does not send user names or passwords. Therefore, SMTP requests to servers that require authentication are unsuccessful.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

How to apply the update

To apply this update, follow these steps:
  1. Uninstall the old namespace. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start the MPS Deployment Tool.
    2. Expand Core Platform, expand Core MPF Install, and then expand MPF Core Namespaces.
    3. Right-click SMTP Mail Provider, and then click Uninstall.
    4. Click Start Deployment.
    5. Wait for the "Deployment Completed" message.
  2. Copy the new .msi file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open the MSIShare folder. To do this, click File in the MPS Deployment Tool, and then click File Locations to find the path of the installer files.
    2. Rename or move the SMTPMailProvider.msi file.
    3. Copy the SMTPMailProvider.msi file from the update to the MSIShare folder.
  3. Install the new namespace. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start the MPS Deployment Tool.
    2. Expand Core Platform, expand Core MPF Install, and then expand MPF Core Namespaces.
    3. Right-click SMTP Mail Provider, and then click Install.
    4. Click Start Deployment.
    5. Wait for the "Deployment Completed" message.
  4. Shut down the Provisioning Engine. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the MPS Engine servers, start Component Services.
    2. Expand Component Services, expand Computers, and then expand My Computer.
    3. Click COM+ Applications.
    4. Right-click Provisioning Engine, and then click Shut Down.
