This article describes how to restore e-mail from a Windows Live OneCare backup.

After you use Windows Live OneCare to restore e-mail files from a backup, you must import the restored files into your e-mail program before you can access those files. E-mail programs usually store your e-mail messages in special files that can be used only by the program that created them.

Import restored e-mail in Microsoft Outlook Express 6

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. On the File menu, click Import, and then click Messages.
  3. Under Select Program, select the mail program in which the original files were created, and then click Next.
  4. Under Specify Location, click Import mail from an OE 6 store directory, and then click OK.
  5. Click Browse, select the folder where you restored your files, and then click Next.
    Note Typically, the folder name begins with C:\Restore, and this information is followed by the date of the restore operation.
  6. Under Select Folders, select the mail folders that you want to restore.
  7. Click Finish.

Import restored e-mail in Microsoft Office Outlook

  1. Start Office Outlook.
  2. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
  3. Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
  4. Under Select file type to import from, click Personal folder file (.pst), and then click Next.
  5. Click Browse, and then select the folder where you restored your files.
  6. Under Options, click Do not import duplicates, and then click Next.
  7. Under Select the folder to import from, make sure that the top-level folder of the mail that you are importing is selected and that the Include subfolders check box is selected.
  8. Select the folder where you want to put the imported files, and then click Finish.

Import restored e-mail in Windows Mail

  1. Start Windows Mail.
  2. On the File menu, click Import, and then click Messages.
  3. In the Select Program dialog box, select the mail program in which the original files were created.
  4. Under Location of messages, click Browse, and then locate the folder that contains the files. This folder appears on the final page of the OneCare Restore Wizard. Usually, the folder name begins with C:\Restore, and this information is followed by the date of the restore operation.
  5. Under Select Folders, select one or more mail folders that you want to restore, or click All Folders.
  6. Click Finish.
