SYMPTOMS

If you use either of the following methods to copy an item to the desktop on a Windows Vista-based computer, the item does not appear on the desktop:
  • On the desktop, you create a shortcut for a file that is located in the %systemroot% folder or that is located in the %systemroot%\system32 folder. You create this shortcut by performing a drag-and-drop operation while you are pressing CTRL + SHIFT.
  • You copy items to the desktop from a network share or from a USB flash drive.
This problem occurs even if the copy operation is successful.

Note Although the item does not appear on the desktop, it does appear in the Desktop folder. The Desktop folder path is \%USERPROFILE%\Desktop.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you disable the Align to Grid feature for the desktop. The location that you copied the item to has a negative y-axis. Therefore, the item is located above the upper border of the visible desktop.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, enable the Align to Grid feature for the desktop by performing the following operation:

Right-click the desktop, point to View, and then click to select Align to Grid.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem will be corrected by Windows Vista Service Pack 1. No individual hotfix will resolve this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
