Your Zune device does not respond when you press a button or a control

SYMPTOMS

When you press a button or a control on your Zune device, you experience one or more of the following issues:
  • A lock icon

    zune lock
    appears in the lower-right corner of the Zune display.
  • Your Zune device stops responding.
  • The screen on your Zune device remains black and does not turn on or respond.
  • Your Zune device stops responding when you use it to take one of the following actions:
    • To play videos, music, podcasts, or the radio
    • To transfer files or to synchronize files

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • The hold switch is in the locked position, and one or more of the following conditions are true:
    • The backlight on the Zune device turns off.
    • The Zune device is turned off.
    • The Zune device goes to sleep.
  • The battery charge is weak.

THINGS TO TRY

To resolve this behavior, use one or more of the following methods:
  • Unlock the hold switch. To unlock the hold switch, move the hold switch to the unlocked position. It may help to move the switch back and forth to make sure that the switch is fully in the unlocked position. After you unlock the hold switch, press the Play/Pause button to wake the device.
  • Restart the Zune device. To restart the Zune device, set the hold switch to the unlocked position, and then do the following:

    as you press the top of the Zune pad. When the Zune device begins to turn on, release the buttons.

  • Connect the Zune device to a power source. If the Zune device is turned off, connecting the Zune device to a power source will wake the Zune device and turn it on. If the device does not turn on immediately, allow your Zune device to charge for 30 minutes, and then disconnect and reconnect the cable to turn the player on.   • Update the device. As soon as the Zune device is back up and running, connect the Zune device to the computer that has the latest Zune software installed, and then update the device to the latest Zune device software version.   • Restore the device software. As a last resort, try to restore the Zune device software. When you restore your Zune device software, all content and the device software is removed.   • Enable Zune device error reporting. This will not immediately fix the current problem, but by electing to send error report data, you will help us improve future product versions. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start the Zune software, and then connect the Zune device by using the sync cable.
    2. Click Settings, click device, and then click Privacy.
    3. Click to select I want to help improve Microsoft software and services by automatically sending error report data from my Zune device to Microsoft after errors occur.
    4. Click OK.
  • Send in the device for service. If the previous steps do not resolve the problem, visit the following Microsoft Web page to sign in and register your device:

    On this Web site, you can submit a request for service if your device is under warranty and if it qualifies for service.
