AVC functionality is not supported in Windows Vista

Expand all | Collapse all

INTRODUCTION

Windows Vista does not support audio video command (AVC) functionality. Specifically, Windows Vista does not support the following AVC functionality:
  • Capturing video from a set-top box (STB) or from digital TV (DTV)
  • Playing back content across the IEEE-1394 FireWire bus
  • Changing channels on an STB or a DTV as described in the CEA-931, the CEA-775, and the CEA-2027 standards

MORE INFORMATION

AVC specifies a command set that is used to control consumer electronic audio and video equipment. The command set builds upon an extensive body of standards work that is underway or that is completed, as referenced in section 2. IEEE 1394.0. These IEEE standards define the digital interface that is used to transport commands from controllers to AV devices and to return responses to the controllers.

The unit architecture of these AV devices are defined within the scope of the configuration ROM and of the CSR architecture that is standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The AVC commands are encapsulated within a generic function control protocol (FCP) specification that the high-definition digital VCR conference developed. This FCP specification has been proposed as an IEC standard. The FCP specification concerns itself narrowly with the syntax and with the semantics of commands that are transmitted by controllers to AV devices. Additionally, the FCP specification concerns itself with the resultant actions that occur at the AV device.
