Xbox 360 Power Cycle Devices

The best way to restart your network equipment is to turn off all the devices that are connected between the wall jack and your console, and then turn on each device in order starting from the wall jack. You should wait several minutes before you turn on the next device.

For example, if you have a modem and a router, you would turn off (or unplug) the modem, the router, and the console. Then, you would turn on the modem, wait about 30 second, turn on the router, wait another 30 second, and then turn on the console.

Your network equipment may include the following devices:
  • Modem (cable or DSL)
  • Router (wired or wireless)
  • Gateway
  • Computer (if you are using Windows Internet Connection Sharing)
Your network is unlikely to include all these devices. Most home networks just have a modem, or a modem and a router. The modem and router might also be combined in one piece of equipment. If you are not using Windows Internet Connection Sharing, then you do not have to restart your computer during this process.

To power cycle your home network devices, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off your console and all network equipment. If any device does not have a power button, disconnect the device from the power source.
  2. Wait about 30 seconds. This time can vary from device to device, but 30 seconds should be enough for most devices to power cycle.
  3. Turn on the device that is first in line starting at the wall and leading to the Xbox console.
Note The first device is usually the modem.
  4. Wait for the modem (or other first device) to fully come online, as indicated by the lights on the front of the modem.
Note Look for lights such as Cable, Internet or WAN that indicate that you have a connection to your ISP.
  5. Turn on the next device in order, if any, that is connected between the first device and the console (for example, a router).
  6. Wait about 30 seconds for the second device to come online.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for any additional equipment.
Note If you have a computer connected to your network, it’s a good idea to check if everything is back up and running by opening up a Web browser and seeing if you can surf the Web.
  8. Finally, turn on the Xbox console.
  9. In the Xbox Dashboard, move to My Xbox.
  10. Open System Settings.
  11. Select Network Settings, Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
