SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Windows Live Messenger 8.1 to Windows Live Messenger 8.5, some event sounds that you selected in Messenger 8.1 are not retained. The default sounds replace the sounds that you selected.

For example, if you changed the Nudge event sound from Nudge.wma to Nudge2.wma and then you upgraded to Messenger 8.5, the Nudge event sound reverts to the default sound, Nudge.wma.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because only the event sounds that were chosen from the Windows Live Messenger default folder are retained after you upgrade to Messenger 8.5.

2.On the Tools men, click Options.
3. Select Alerts and Sounds.
4. Under Windows Live Messenger Events, select the Messenger event for which you want to change the sound, and then click Browse.
5. Select the .wma file that you want to use, and then click Open.
6. Click OK.
7. Repeat Steps 2 through 6 for each event for which you want to change the sound.
