Error code when you install Windows Vista SP1 on a computer that is running the Korean version of the 2007 Office system: "0x80070003"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Vista-based computer on which the language locale is set to Korean.
  • You have installed the Korean version of the 2007 Microsoft Office system.
  • Microsoft Office Input Method Editor (IME) 2007 is set as the default input language.
In this scenario, when you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), the installation may fail. Additionally, you may receive the following error code:
0x80070003

CAUSE

This issue is caused by Microsoft Office IME (Korean) 2007. This application is installed when you install the Korean version of the 2007 Office system.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Apply hotfix 937905

Install Windows Vista SP1 after you apply the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Reinstall the 2007 Office system

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Uninstall the 2007 Office system.
  2. Install Windows Vista SP1.
  3. Reinstall the 2007 Office system.
