You can’t install the Zune software because a required component is missing

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Zune Music + Video software, you receive one of the following error messages:
Error message 1
The media for installation package couldn't be found. It might be incomplete or corrupt.
Error message 2
Setup must stop because the required package failed to install.
Error message 3
Can't contact Microsoft Update. Please try again later.
Error message 4
Can't download the required components from Microsoft Update. Please try again later.
Error message 5
Can't install the required components from Microsoft Update. Please try again later.
Error message 6
Path chosen is not valid
Error message 7
Installation failed, package Zune failed to install

Error message 8
No Installation Media

Can't find the media for installation package ".NET framework Runtime 2.0". It might be incomplete or corrupt.

Error Code 0x80070002


One of these error messages may also occur when you try to install one of the following products:
  • The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows Media Format 11 runtime
  • Microsoft Error Reporting 2.0
  • XMLLite
In all instances, the Zune software doesn't install.

CAUSE

These errors can happen when software updates are required by the Zune software, but aren't available when you initially download and install the Zune software.

THINGS TO TRY

You can click the Online Solution Wizard, which offers various solutions to installation problems. 

Or, you can follow the steps listed below the Wizard, and download a complete software package.

1. Try the Online Solution Wizard:

2. Download all required updates in one package:
  1. Verify that you have administrative rights to install software.
  2. Make sure that you have sufficient free space to install the Zune software. For more information about system requirements for Zune, visit the following website:

  3. Click the Download button on the following page to install the update package:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=206980
  4. In the dialog box that appears, click Run to start the installation process.
  5. The installation should start automatically. If you are prompted, type the name of the folder where the files will be extracted.
  6. When the files are copied to the folder, open the folder, and then double-click Startzune.exe to install the Zune software.
