On a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer, you cannot access the correct DFS share after information about the link target is updated

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

In a network environment, you deploy a cascaded Distributed File System (DFS) design.
You configure DFS links that point to network shares.
You update the network shares to which the DFS links point.

In this scenario, a Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based DFS client computer does not obtain the updated information about the link target from the DFS root. Therefore, you cannot access the correct network share.

In this scenario, you must restart the client computer to update the information about the DFS link target.

This problem occurs if the DFS cache is not updated.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. To use this hotfix, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, update the DFS cache by running the following command:

dfsutil /pktflush

MORE INFORMATION

If you have to create more than 5,000 links in a domain-based DFS namespace, you can create multiple DFS namespaces that meet the recommended sizes. Then, you can link these namespaces together. This method is known as a cascaded DFS design, and the links that point to another namespace are called interlinks.
