You receive an error message when you try to access the Outlook Web Access global address list in an Exchange Server 2007 environment

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 environment, when you try to access the global address list (GAL) in Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access, you receive the following error message:
There was an unknown error accessing the directory. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization.
The entire error report is listed below: Show Report
If you then click Show Report, the detailed report includes the following messages:
System.DirectoryServices.Protocols.DirectoryOperationException
The size limit was exceeded

CAUSE

This problem occurs when more than one thousand users share the same manager. When you try to access the global address list by viewing or selecting these users from the address book, the query to the Active Directory directory service returns an exception.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1.
