A Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Server 2003-based multiprocessor system stops responding when you resume the system from standby or from hibernation

SYMPTOMS

When you resume a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Server 2003-based multiprocessor system from standby or from hibernation state, the system stops responding (hangs). This problem is most likely to occur when the Windows Server 2003-based system is running on a multiprocessor virtual machine.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a race condition in the Hal.dll module.

RESOLUTION

Update 946331 has been superseded by 954429:
954429  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954429/ ) A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008 stops responding on a black screen after you resume the computer from hibernation

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
