Group policy sets certain Remote Installation Services (RIS) installation options when you start a Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE) client session. These installation options are set for the following servers:
- RIS server
- Legacy mode of a Windows Deployment Services (WDS) server
- Mixed mode of a WDS server
The following table lists and describes the Group Policy settings that are associated with RIS. Each of these settings can have any of the following three values:
- Enabled
- Disabled
- Not Configured

| Automatic Setup
| Predefines the computer name and a location within Active Directory for the client computer accounts. (Another alternative is to prestage client computer accounts.)

| Custom Setup
| Lets users define a unique name for this computer, and lets users specify where the computer account will be created within Active Directory.

| Restart Setup
| Restarts an operating system installation attempt if the installation fails during the text-mode part of the setup process.
|
| Tools
| Lets users access tools. This includes the Recovery Console from the Client Installation Wizard.

On a Windows Server 2003 domain, the default values for these Group Policy settings are listed as follows:
- Automatic Setup: Enabled
- Custom Setup: Disabled
- Restart Setup: Disabled
- Tools: Disabled
When you run Default Group Policy Restore Utility (Dcgpofix.exe), it will reset the current values to these default values.
On a Windows Server 2008 domain, the default values for these Group Policy settings are listed as follows:
- Automatic Setup: Not Configured
- Custom Setup: Not Configured
- Restart Setup: Not Configured
- Tools: Not Configured
When you run the Dcgpofix.exe tool, it will reset the current values to the default values of a Windows Server 2003 domain.
