SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007, you put a computer or a computer object into Maintenance Mode.
  • The computer shuts down.
In this scenario, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • You are not prompted that the computer is shut down after the Maintenance Mode window expires.
  • Although the Maintenance Mode window has expired, the computer or the computer object is still shown to be in Maintenance Mode in the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Console.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you put the Root Management Server (RMS) server into Maintenance Mode. When the RMS server is in Maintenance Mode, the workflows that are responsible for bringing instances out of Maintenance Mode are unloaded. Therefore, when Maintenance Mode windows expire, the RMS server will not automatically bring the instances out of Maintenance Mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not put the following computers or computer objects into Maintenance Mode:
  • Collection Server
  • Contained objects on a RMS server
  • Gateway Server
  • Health Service
  • Health Service Watcher
  • Management Server
  • Root Management Server
  • Secondary Management Server
  • Site Management Server
If this issue occurs on a Management Server, the RMS server must be manually taken out of Maintenance Mode. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that is a member of the Operations Manager Administrators group for the Operations Manager 2007 Management Group.
  2. In the Operations Console, click Monitoring.
  3. Expand the Monitoring node, and then click Discovered Inventory.
  4. In the Actions pane, click Change target type.
  5. In the Select a Target Type dialog box, click Root Management Server in the list, and then click OK.
  6. Click Stop Maintenance Mode in the Actions pane, and then click Yes.
