INTRODUCTION

This article describes an update to Windows Live Photo Gallery that is available on Microsoft Update. This update will be offered to customers who have version 2008 of Windows Live Photo Gallery installed. These updates will be automatically installed if you have chosen to enable updates to be installed on the system automatically. If you have chosen the option to decide whether you want to download or install updates, you will be notified of these new updates on the day that they are available.

Update Details

This update for Windows Live Photo Gallery fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Uninstalling Windows Desktop Search on a Windows XP-based computer may cause metadata loss and broken functionality for photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery

On a Windows XP-based computer, uninstalling Windows Desktop Search may remove property handler registrations made by Windows Imaging Component (WIC) that are required to support photo file types in Windows Live Photo Gallery. The file name extensions that are affected include the following:
  • .jpg
  • .jpeg
  • .png
  • .tif
  • .tiff
  • .wdp
  • .bmp
  • .jfif
  • .jpe
You will only see .jpg files in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Other photo files will be removed from the Windows Live Photo Gallery and will no longer be detected. Any metadata changes that could not be written to these files will be lost. These metadata changes include tags, captions, ratings, and the date that the photo taken. This issue may also prevent the Windows Live Photo Gallery from successfully reading metadata from or writing metadata to .jpg photos. In every case, the source photos are still available on the hard disk and are not affected. This update enables Windows Live Photo Gallery to check for the missing components and fall back to a pre-determined property handler.
