SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, you cannot locally configure or locally delete the application partitions that are created for IP telephony.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Tapicfg.exe tool is not included in Windows Server 2008.

To resolve this problem, use the Tapicfg.exe tool in Windows Server 2003 to configure or to delete the application partitions that are created for IP telephony. Do this before you upgrade to Windows Server 2008.

To use the Tapicfg.exe tool to delete the application partitions that are created for IP telephony, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
tapicfg remove /directory:PartitionName
Note In this command, PartitionName is a placeholder for the Domain Name System (DNS) name of the application partitions that you want to delete. This DNS name must be a fully qualified domain name.

To follow these steps, you must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group in the Active Directory directory service. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:

Notes

The application partitions that are created for IP telephony continue to work as expected in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Microsoft Windows 2000 even though Windows Server 2008 is installed on the computer.
To configure or to delete the application partitions remotely, you can use the Tapicfg.exe tool on another computer that is running Windows Server 2003. However, we do not recommend this method.
