SYMPTOMS

In Windows Server 2008, if a volume is encrypted by using BitLocker on a shared cluster disk, other computers in the cluster cannot access this volume.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because BitLocker uses keys that are specified by the computer. These keys cannot be replicated in a clustered environment. Therefore, any node other than the one on the disk that was encrypted cannot decrypt the volume.

RESOLUTION

Do not use BitLocker to encrypt volumes in a clustered environment. Volumes that are encrypted by BitLocker are not supported as shared disks in a clustered environment.
