FIX: You receive a FormatException message when you use the System.Net.Mail class to send e-mail in the .NET Framework 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the System.Net.Mail class to send e-mail, you receive a FormatException message. This problem occurs when a recipient e-mail address includes double quotation marks. For example, this problem occurs when you run the following code.
Dim message as MailMessage = New MailMessage("from@microsoft.local", """user1.""@microsoft.local", "subject", "body")

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the System.Web.Mail class instead of the System.Net.Mail class.
