SYMPTOMS

On a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, you use Microsoft Outlook to send an e-mail message in Rich Text format (RTF). When you do this, the recipient sees unexpected text in the top of the message.

For example, the recipient may see a message that includes the following string:
EmailQuote { margin-left: 1pt; padding-left: 4pt; border-left: #800000 2px solid; }
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
The Convert to HTML format option is selected in the Outlook Rich Text options field.
The recipient uses an e-mail client that does not support "style" tags in HTML messages. For example, some types of mobile devices do not support "style" tags.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Exchange Server 2007 incorrectly inserts a "style" tag without a "comment" tag in the "head" section of the HTML part. Exchange Server 2007 does this when it converts the RTF message to HTML format.

For the sample string that is described in the "Symptoms" section, the correct text is as follows.
<style><!--
.EmailQuote { margin-left: 1pt; padding-left: 4pt; border-left: #800000 2px solid; }
-->
</style>
