This article describes the May 2008 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update. This update is a package of software updates that address common application compatibility issues that occur in Windows Vista.

When you try to install and to run certain legacy games or applications in Windows Vista, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

•	The game, the application, or the firmware may not be installed correctly.
•	The game, the application, or the firmware may cause system instability.
•	The primary functions of the game, of the application, or of the firmware may not work correctly.

This update improves application compatibility in Windows Vista by using the following methods:

•	The update puts a hard block on the application. A hard block prevents an application that is incompatible with Windows Vista from running on the operating system.
•	The update puts a soft block on the application. A soft block provides notification when an application that is incompatible with Windows Vista starts to run.
•	The update improves the application’s functionality in Windows Vista.

These methods apply to the following applications that were added to the update:

•	The following builds of Webroot Spy Sweeper Consumer: • 5.3.1.2344 through 5.3.2.2368 • 5.5.1.3172 through 5.5.1.3356 • 5.5.7.48 through 5.5.7.122 These builds are hard-blocked.
•	The following builds of Webroot Spy Sweeper Enterprise: • 3.0.2.1623 through 3.1.5.2246 • 3.5.0.3189 through 3.5.0.3586 These builds are hard-blocked.
•	RealVNC Ltd VNC Server Personal Edition 4 This application is updated to improve functionality.
•	Microsoft Zune Software This application is hard-blocked when you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
•	Microsoft Games Explorer This application is updated to improve functionality.
•	Sony Picture Package version 1.0 through version 1.8.1 These applications are hard-blocked.

This update is cumulative. Therefore, it contains all fixes that were included in previous application compatibility updates. These fixes improve application compatibility in Windows Vista for the following applications:
