SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or a 64-bit version of Windows XP.
  • You connect a removable storage device to the computer. This device uses the FAT file system.
  • You manually disconnect the removable storage device. At the same time, you run an application that uses the FlushViewOfFile() function to write a big file to the removable storage device.
In this scenario, the application stops responding.

Additionally, if you try to access this storage device through Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a deadlock in the FAT file system.
