An update is available that installs Key Management Service 1.1 for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions

This update installs Key Management Service (KMS) 1.1 on computers that are running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions. KMS 1.1 provides support for the following KMS client computers:

• KMS clients that are running Windows Server 2008
• KMS clients that are running Windows Vista

Installation instructions

To install KMS 1.1, follow these steps:

1. Use the Kmsw2k3.exe file to install KMS 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 if it is not already installed.
2. Run the KB948003.exe update file.
3. Restart the computer.
   
   Note If you do not restart the computer after you install the KB948003.exe file, you may receive the following error message when you enter the product key:
   Error: 0xc004f050 The Software Licensing service reported that the product key is invalid
4. From the Step-by-Step guide that is included in the update package, follow these steps:
   1. Install and activate the appropriate KMS key.
   2. Make sure that the firewall is configured correctly to enable incoming communication with the KMS host computer through TCP port 1688.
   3. Make sure that the KMS host computer is published by DNS SRV records to enable automatic discovery for KMS client computers.
