SYMPTOMS

Active Directory System Discovery does not resolve the IP address of a computer that is discovered by Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 when the computer is operating in a disjoint namespace. This behavior prevents the Data Discovery Records (DDRs) from being generated.

Note A disjoint namespace means that the Domain Name Service (DNS) suffix of the discovered computer differs from the domain's DNS suffix. For more information about the disjoint namespace, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/fc16ca97-e86c-417b-a9ed-991e8860969a1033.mspx?mfr=true
The following error messages are logged in the Adsysdis.log file when the issue occurs:
GetIPAddr - getaddrinfo() for <FQDN> failed with error code 11001. $$<SMS_AD_SYSTEM_DISCOVERY_AGENT><Fri Apr 25 14:43:20.475 2008 Eastern Daylight Time><thread=1692 (0x69C)> ERROR: Machine <computer name> is offline or invalid.~ $$<SMS_AD_SYSTEM_DISCOVERY_AGENT><Fri Apr 25 14:43:20.475 2008 Eastern Daylight Time><thread=1692 (0x69C)> ERROR: CADSource::ProcessSystemInfo: Failed to get IP Address for the system.~ $$<SMS_AD_SYSTEM_DISCOVERY_AGENT><Fri Apr 25 14:43:20.475 2008 Eastern Daylight Time><thread=1692 (0x69C)> ERROR: Failed to generate system information.~ $$<SMS_AD_SYSTEM_DISCOVERY_AGENT><Fri Apr 25 14:43:20.475 2008 Eastern Daylight Time><thread=1692 (0x69C)>

CAUSE

The resolution mechanism that is used by System Center Configuration Manager 2007 tries to resolve the IP address by using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) that is listed in Active Directory directory service for the discovered computer. If this method does not resolve the IP address, no DDR is generated, and no other resolution mechanism is tried.
