Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows XP SP2 x86 and Windows Server 2003 x86

This tool only runs if you are installing Internet Explorer 8 on a Windows XP SP2-based computer or on a Windows Server 2003 x86-based computer.

The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks the computer for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software. This malicious software includes Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. Additionally, the tool helps remove any infection that the tool finds in the computer. If the computer has an infection, the tool notifies you after the computer restarts when you are installing Internet Explorer 8. If you do not receive notification about an infection, the tool did not find an infection.

The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool only scans the computer one time during the installation of Internet Explorer 8. The tool does not provide continuous virus scanning. The tool only runs again if you download an update to the tool by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update, either through the Microsoft Web site or through Automatic Updates.
