Service Pack 1-based computer, all services or processes that require
authentication may stop responding. For example, when you type your user name and password, the system stops responding at the "Welcome" screen. CAUSEThe problem occurs because of a race condition that leads to a
deadlock condition in the Lsass.exe process. When the deadlock condition occurs, the Lsass.exe
process cannot handle authentication requests. The problem is most frequently
triggered when the system is under a heavy load and the computer password is
changed. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationWindows Vista Service Pack 1A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
