SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You are using a Chinese edition of Microsoft Expression Web on a computer that is also running Microsoft Office Professional 2007. You have configured Chinese (Hong Kong SAR) as the primary language in Office Professional 2007.

In this scenario, when you click the New command on the File menu in Expression Web, the New dialog box that appears is empty.

The New dialog box should contain menu items that are used to create Web sites or Web-related objects. For example, the following list includes some menu items that you typically can view in the New dialog box:
  • Page
  • Web site
  • HTML
  • ASPX
  • CSS

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a bug in an Office shared component.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must configure two registry values and then change the primary editing language in Office to a language other than Chinese (Hong Kong SAR). To do this, follow these steps.

Step 1: Configure the registry

To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Exit Expression Web.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then press ENTER.
  3. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Expression\Web Designer\12.0
  4. Right-click the subkey, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type UILanguage, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click UILanguage, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0404, and then press ENTER.
  8. Click New, and then click String Value.
  9. Type FollowSystemUI, and then press ENTER.
  10. Right-click UILanguage, and then click Modify.
  11. In the Value data box, type Off, and then press ENTER.
  12. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 2: Change the primary language in Office

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Exit Office.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings.
  3. Click the Editing Languages tab.
  4. In the Primary editing language list, click a language other than Chinese (Hong Kong SAR), and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

This workaround causes Expression Web to always display the user interface in Chinese. The UILanguage registry entry overrides language settings that you configure in the user interface.
