Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation fails with an error message, and the following error is logged in the service pack installation log: "8007F0F4 - STATUS_PREREQUISITE_FAILED"

Symptoms

On a Windows XP-based computer, you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). However, you receive one of the following error messages.

Error 1

This Service Pack requires the machine to be on AC Power before setup starts.

Error 2

Service Pack 3 Setup has been canceled because Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP is not compatible with this version of Windows. Before you can continue, you must: 1) Uninstall Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit 2) (Optional) Install Windows SteadyState, the newer version of Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit. For more detailed information, go to the Shared Access page on the Microsoft Web site.

Error 3

Service Pack 3 Setup has been canceled because Windows XP SP3 cannot be installed over RDP 6.0 MUI PACK (Update for Windows XP (KB925877)). Before you can continue, you must Uninstall KB925877.

Error 4

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 cannot be applied to Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP). A unique SP3 update package for WinFLP will be made available at download.microsoft.com.

Error 5

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 cannot be applied to Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS). A unique SP3 update package for WEPOS will be made available at download.microsoft.com.

Error 6

Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install Service Pack 3 failed. For More details check the Log File Drive_Letter:\windows\svcpack.log.

Additionally, in every instance, the following error message is also logged in the service pack installation log:

8007F0F4 - STATUS_PREREQUISITE_FAILED

Cause

Several prerequisites must be met before you install Windows XP SP3. If any of the conditions are not met, you will receive one of the errors that are described in the "Symptoms" section. The following causes describe the reasons for the respective error messages that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section:

Cause of Error 1

This error occurs if you try to install the service pack when the computer is using battery power. This check is performed to eliminate the possibility of update failure because of battery power exhaustion during the installation process.

Cause of Error 2

This error occurs if you try to install the service pack on a computer where “Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP” is already installed. This version of the toolkit is incompatible with Windows XP SP3.

Cause of Error 3

This error occurs if you have "Update for Windows XP (KB925877)" installed on the computer. This update includes the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) for the Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 (Terminal Services Client 6.0). This MUI pack is incompatible with Windows XP SP3.

Cause of Error 4

This error occurs if you try to install Windows XP SP3 over the “Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP)” operating system. This version of the service pack does not apply to the WinFLP operating system.

Cause of Error 5

This error occurs if you try to install Windows XP SP3 over the “Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS)” operating system. This version of the service pack does not apply to the WEPOS operating system.

Cause of Error 6

This error occurs if you try to install Windows XP SP3 over Windows XP Media Center Edition or over Windows XP Media Center Edition 2003.

Note This error does not occur if you try to install Windows XP SP3 over Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 or over later versions.

Resolution

To resolve these errors, you must follow specific steps that are appropriate to the error message that you received. These steps are described in the following sections.

Resolution for Error 1

Connect the computer to an AC power such as an electrical outlet. For more information about the power requirements for the computer, contact the computer manufacturer.

Resolution for Error 2

Uninstall the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
Click Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit, and then click Remove.
After the program is removed, install Windows XP SP3.

Resolution for Error 3

Use the Add or Remove Programs item to uninstall "Update for Windows XP (KB925877)." This update includes the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) for the Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 (Terminal Services Client 6.0). To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
Click to select the Show updates check box at the top of the page.
Click Update for Windows XP (KB925877), and then click Remove.
After the KB925877 update is removed, install Windows XP SP3.

Resolution for Error 4 and for Error 5

This version of Windows XP SP3 is incompatible with the WinFLP or WEPOS operating system that you have on the computer. A unique service pack update package for the WinFLP operating system and for the WEPOS operating system is scheduled to be released on the Microsoft Download Center at a later date.

Resolution for Error 6

To install Windows XP SP3 on a computer that is running Windows XP Media Center Edition or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2003, you must first install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). To obtain Windows XP SP2, you can use Automatic Updates or Windows Update.
