SYMPTOMS

When you use a third-party backup product to perform a backup on a Windows Server 2008-based Network Policy Server (NPS) computer, the backup may fail.

This problem may occur when you do not configure the NPS role.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the backup software follows the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) documented backup method. If the NPS Writer reports that a file does not exist on the system, the backup fails.

APPLIES TO
  • Windows Server 2008 Datacenter
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard
  • Windows Web Server 2008
