An embedded message is removed from the attachment list on Exchange Server 2007 if the embedded message subject ends with .com, .exe, or any other blocked extension

SYMPTOMS

In an Exchange 2007 environment, if an embedded message subject ends with .com, .exe, or any other blocked extension, the embedded message is removed from the attachment list. For example, an embedded message that has the subject "What is wrong with contoso.com" is removed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1. Then, install the update on the Exchange server. After you install Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1, you must add a new entry in the Edgetransport.exe.config XML file to enable the hotfix on Edge Server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Stop the Exchange Transport service.
  2. Locate the EdgeTransport.exe.config file. This file is located in the following path:
    drive:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin\
  3. Add the following entry between the <appSettings> element and the </appSettings> element of the EdgeTransport.exe.config file:
    <add key="IgnoreEmbeddedMessageNamesInAttachmentFilterAgent" value="true" />
  4. Restart the Transport service.
