SYMPTOMS

In a mixed Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 environment, the Exchange 2003 servers are located in a different Active Directory site than the Exchange 2007 servers. In this environment, the Exchange 2007 users cannot send e-mail messages to a mail-enabled public folder if the following conditions are true:
  • The public folder is hosted only on the Exchange 2003 servers.
  • The Active Directory site link costs exceed 500.
Additionally, a non-delivery report (NDR) is generated that resembles the following:
Delivery has failed to these recipients or distribution lists:
<Public Folder on Exchange 2003 server>
There's a problem with the recipient's mailbox. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please try resending this message, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator. Sent by Microsoft Exchange Server 2007
