INTRODUCTION

Issue that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Outlook 2003 may not be tolerant of network conditions. For example, Outlook 2003 may prompt you repeatedly for a password. If you do not enter a password or if you enter an incorrect password, Outlook 2003 may silently enter Offline mode, and you will not be connected to the mailbox. In this case, you do not receive an error message or a notification.

Outlook 2003 does not prompt you for a password, and the user experience is successful when the following conditions are true:
  • The following kinds of password authentication are used:
    • Negotiate
    • Kerberos
    • NTLM
  • The logged-on user credentials enable you to access the Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox.
However, there are several exceptions in which you may experience issues. These exceptions are as follows:
  • If the Exchange Server account to which you want to log on does not accept your Windows user credentials, you cannot log on to the server. Additionally, you silently do not connect to the mailbox.

In multiple-profile scenarios, the registry subkey that this hotfix contains cannot be used if you log on to separate Exchange Server topologies. Additionally, you must use a script to configure the registry subkey when you select a profile to use.
  • If you must change your password the next time that you log on when the registry subkey that this hotfix contains is configured, you are not prompted and you do not receive a message. Additionally, you silently do not connect to the mailbox.
  • If your password is expired when the registry subkey that this hotfix contains is configured, you are not prompted and you do not receive a message. Additionally, you silently do not connect to the mailbox.
  • If you use Basic authentication for RPC or for HTTP, the credentials dialog box is always displayed. This occurs even if the registry subkey that this hotfix contains is configured.

This occurs because the hotfix does not affect Basic authentication. As a user or as an administrator, you can override the registry subkey in this hotfix by configuring the "Always Prompt for Credentials" registry subkey.
