SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, you configure a site system server that uses an Internet FQDN. The server is located in a secondary site. Then, you try to configure connections for Internet clients.

When you do this, you experience one or more of the following issues in the Configuration Manager console:
  • The distribution point does not display options for Internet connections.
  • The software update point displays options for Internet connections. However, the configuration is ineffective.
  • The management point displays options for Internet connections. However, the configuration is ineffective.
  • The fallback status point unloads the Configuration Manager console when you try to view or to edit the console's properties. If you add the fallback status point role to a site system server that has been configured to use an Internet FQDN, the wizard displays an error message. However, the fallback status point role is installed even if it cannot be configured.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Internet-based client management is not supported for secondary sites in System Center Configuration Manager 2007. Only primary sites support Internet-based client management. However, the Configuration Manager console does not prevent you from configuring an Internet FQDN for site systems in secondary sites.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, edit the properties of the site system server in the secondary site to remove the Internet FQDN value. For Internet-based client management, make sure that site system servers are in a primary site, and then configure them to have an Internet FQDN and to have connections for Internet clients.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
