SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running a Windows Server 2003-based computer or a Windows Server 2008-based computer.
  • You try to enable the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for a shared folder on a volume that is larger than 64 terabytes (TB) minus 8 gigabytes (GB).
In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
STOP: 0x0000007E
Additionally, you may receive this error message when you do one of the following:
  • Enable the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for a shared folder.
  • Run ntbackup to back up the volume with shadow copy enabled.
  • Run chkdsk.exe.
  • Generate a storage report by using File Server Resource Manager (FSRM).
Note All these operations use shadow copy services. The system returns this Stop error as long as the operation is on a volume that is larger than 64 TB minus 8 GB (70,360,154,226,688 bytes).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an issue with the Volsnap.sys file. The Volsnap.sys file is one of the system drivers for the Volume Shadow Copy Service, and this driver was not designed for NTFS volumes that are larger than 64 TB minus 8 GB.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not use any of the operations that are discussed in the “Symptoms” section on a volume that is larger than 64 TB minus 8 GB. Or, do not use a volume that is larger than 64 TB minus 8 GB.

Note We recommend that you not use a volume that is larger than 64 TB minus 8 GB if you have to use chkdsk.exe.
