Error message when you try to install Windows Mobile Device Center on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008: "The update could not be installed because at least one Windows component required by Windows Mobile Device Center is missing"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, you receive the following error message:
The update could not be installed because at least one Windows component required by Windows Mobile Device Center is missing

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Desktop Experience feature is not installed. In Windows Server 2008, the Desktop Experience feature must be installed before you can install Windows Mobile Device Center.

Note You cannot install Microsoft ActiveSync on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Adminstrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  2. In the console tree, click Features, and then click Add Features.
  3. In the details pane, click to select the Desktop Experience check box.
  4. Click Next, and then click Install.
You can now successfully install Windows Mobile Device Center.
