While you are installing the Zune software, you receive error code 0x80070643

SYMPTOMS

During the installation of the Zune software, you may experience a "fatal error" with error code 0x80070643.

THINGS TO TRY

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the Windows Update Web site to make sure Windows is up to date:
    http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate)
  2. Verify that the Windows Firewall service is started. To do this, follow the steps for your operating system:

    Windows XP
    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Double-click Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
    3. View the Service status. If the service is stopped, click the START button.
    Windows Vista
    1. Click Start

      If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2. Click Services.
    3. Double-click Windows Firewall.
    4. View the Service status. If the service is stopped, click the START button.
  3. Again try to install the Zune software.
  4. If you still receive error code "0x80070643," visit the following Web site to download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:

  5. Start the Windows installer Clean Up Utility. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
  6. In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, select the following items:
    • (All Users) Zune [Version number]
    • (All Users) Zune Language Pack (ES) [Version number]
    • (All Users) Zune Language Pack (FR) [Version number]
  7. Click Remove.
  8. Click the Exit button.
  9. Empty the Windows temporary folder:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type %temp% , and then click OK.
    2. In the window that opens, click Select All on the Edit menu.
    3. On the File menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
      Are you sure you want to send these items to the Recycle Bin?
