SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are using a computer that is running Windows Vista and that is joined to a domain.
  • You try to install Windows Home Server Connector on this computer from a shared folder on a server that is running Windows Home Server. (You use the Setup.exe program or the WHSConnectorInstall.exe program to install Windows Home Server Connector.)
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you.

CAUSE

This error occurs because NTLM authentication does not let .exe files run from a shared folder. If your user account is a corporate domain user account, Windows Vista tries to use Kerberos authentication to authenticate the account. However, the computer does not connect to the corporate domain. Therefore, a domain controller cannot be reached, and NTLM authentication is used.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Use a local administrator account to log on to the Windows Vista-based computer.
  2. Copy the Setup.exe file or the WHSConnectorInstall.exe file from the "\\ServerName\Software\Home Server Connector Software" folder to a local folder on the Windows Vista-based computer.

Note ServerName represents the name of the server that is running Windows Home Server.
  3. Run the Setup.exe program or the WHSConnectorInstall.exe program from the local folder.

APPLIES TO
  • Windows Home Server
